The Merirosvopeli: FAQ

Q: What is The Merirosvopeli?

A: "Merirosvopeli" is Finnish and means simply Pirate Game. The Peli is a roleplaying game. Not a "computer-RPG", but a real roleplaying game, which needs a game master, players, a couple of exotic dices, lots of time and lots of food to be played. Sorry, but there’s only the Finnish version existing at this moment. There was a project to translate game in English, but unfortunately it was destroyed with the lousy Quantum Bigfoot harddisk of our brave translator, Oskari.

Q: What is a role playing game?

A: That would be a too long story to be told here

Q: What is The Peli like?

A: The Peli is located at the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries in to the Caribbean sea, where pirates and privateers seeked for gold, fighted with each other and drank rum at the Curacao harbor. We wanted adventures and action, that is why there realism-level is so low and there’s also a lot of formally unknown pirate material in the game.

Q: What is The Peli’s system like?

A: We have ripped the best parts of our favorite games, added some Laser Squad and some our stuff, and there we have it. The ultimate system (methinks). Only d6 and d10 dices are needed (although d20 and d8 can be very useful), and there ain’t any other big surprises waiting for one, who has already maked himself familiar with other roleplaying games. Expect D&D maybe.

Q: Is The Peli good for beginners?

A: Maybe, if you can understand the rules. Though, it has never been tested by outsiders.

Q: How and when was The Peli made?

A: We just wanted to make a game of our own, and realized the total lack of pirate-oriented games. So, we sat by the computer on stormy night in 1997 and started writing.

Q: Who are responsible for this?

A: Mainly Mikko "Järppä" Järvinen and Niko Kannisto.

Q: You seem to know nothing about that era...

A: Yes… we know. The Peli is still under construction. We’ll sure need a ancient Caribbean map and our information on ships is mainly taken from Sid Meyer’s Pirates!.

Q: If The Peli was a song, what it was?

A: Of course Iron Maiden’s Rime Of The Ancient Mariner... (Running Wild: Under Jolly Roger would be somehow, if not musically, a better alternative?)

Q: Contact?

A: jarppa@themerirosvopeli.cjb.net

Q: Do I have to pay for The Peli?

A: No. But if you like it, you sure can send us something. Some material for the game for example. Or Irish Whiskey.
